Surprising Dong Hoi has transformed itself from post-war ruins and grasslands into a thriving and very walkable community with fascinating history and attractions just off our doorsteps. It’s a city of an ancient citadel, a bustling fish and fresh foods market, attractive riverside park, nearly deserted beaches and mini-Paris like tree shaded residential streets.

Guests tell us that it’s not only the least expensive way to see the caves (they note that tours cost less from Dong Hoi) but it is the perfect spot, mid-Vietnam, to take a break for a few days to relax, explore the city, read by the Riverwalk Park, stroll the beaches…and refresh your travel energies. In short, many guests tell us they are postponing their departure date.

All the City Walks listed are self-guided and free. Most are pleasant walking tours from a few minutes to an hour or two. Even more are accessible by bicycle (available for modest rent).  Of course a motorbike rental expands your horizons even further.

Oh…there’s some very good specialty restaurants here, western as well as Vietnamese. Just ask the desk. Enjoy!
